The problem lies in the difference in the thickness of the black chromium layer resulting from electroplating in various solution conditions on the motorcycle rim which is not yet known. The purpose of this study was to determine the difference in the thickness of the black chromium layer on motorcycle rims. The methods used include specimen preparation, electroplating process, specimen preparation for Scanning Electron Microscopy, and analysis of coating thickness results. The results of the study were (1) the thickness of the black chromium layer measured from the SEM photo showed that the maximum thickness of the black chromium layer was 25.45 micron meters under electroplating conditions at a voltage of 7 V and a process duration of 6 minutes, (2) a combination compressive test showed that the black chromium layer was after the rim has been loaded up to 2 tons there is no cracking or peeling, (3) heating the low carbon steel rims for 2 hours at 200 °C remains solid black, but the color fades gradually to gray from 250 to 350 °C and starts to occur peeling layer at 250 to 400 °C. The best electroplating conditions are applied to standard real size motorcycle rim coating. © 2023 Author(s).
