Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and Phenol is one of the pollutants in the hospital wastewater often exceed the quality standards. It is caused biological processes have not been effective in degrading COD and phenol. The AF2B Reactor contained biofilter that has a large surface area so the biodegradation process of pollutants by microbes can be maximized. On the other hand, a consortium of bacteria have the ability to degrade organic matter (COD, phenol) than a single bacterium The objective of research was to determine the effect of starter volume and air supplies on reducing COD and phenol in hospital wastewater using bacterial consortium in the AF2B Reactor batch. The research was conducted in two stages: bacterial consortium acclimatization and hospital wastewater treatment in the AF2B Reactor batch. Variables used are volume of starter (6.5, 7.5 and 8.5 L) and air supplies (2.5; 5; and 7.5 L/min). Materials used are hospital wastewater and bacteria consortium (Pseudomonas diminuta, Pseudomonas capica, Bacillius sp, and Nitrobacter sp). Reactor AF2B shaped plastic tank containing filter media shaped a wasp nest is used as a medium for the growth of bacteria consortium. In the acclimatization process, bacterial isolates were grown using wastewater as a medium added gradually followed by the addition of nutrients. Furthermore, the results of acclimatization (as a starter) was fed into the AF2B Reactor which operates in a batch then added to the wastewater at a certain volume (as variable), and followed by aeration at a certain flowrate (as variable). Sampling done at any time to determine reducing the concentration of COD and phenol. Analysis of COD using open reflux and analysis of phenol using spectrophotometric method. The result of research shows that volume of starter 8.5 L and air supplies of 7.5 L/min can reduce COD and phenol concentration of 86% and 88% respectively. © 2017 American Scientific Publishers.
