Abstract

This paper presents a photovoltaic MPPT system utilizing a two-phase boost converter for low input current ripple. The MPPT employs the perturb and observe (PO) method suitable for PV systems. Each phase of the two-phase boost converter operates complementarily with each other to reduce the input current ripple of the MPPT. This improves the searching time of the PO method, which further provides better system efficiency. Performance of the system having dynamic response and well-regulated PV output voltage was simulated and analyzed. Results indicate that the two-phase boost converter was able to achieve input current ripple of 6.71%, outperforming the 14.31% input current ripple achieved by the standard boost counterpart. © 2019 IEEE.
