Abstract

Separator is an important component in lithium ion batteries that is placed between the anode and cathode which functions to keep the two electrodes from touching directly and to prevent electrical short circuit. In addition, it is also a medium for transporting ions needed in the electrochemical process. This research aims to make a separator material with Polyolefin polymer with the addition of poly(vinylidene flouride) composite (PVDF/nano chitosan) using the membrane blending method. The comparison of PVDF/Nano chitosan composition variations are 10:0, 9:1, 8:2, and 7:3. The purpose of increasing the concentration fraction of nano chitosan to PVDF is to improve the performance of the composite separator, which includes porosity dimensions, pore density, and electrical conductivity. FTIR data shows that the material meets the criteria of composite materials, as the two phases can be distinguished by their molecular vibrational wave numbers. The higher concentration of nano chitosan resulted in a decrease in porosity dimension and an increase in porosity density, with the smallest pore dimension of 1.71 μm and pore density of 4.07x1011 count/m2 at a ratio of 7:3. This material can be categorized as a separator for lithium-ion batteries based on the above criteria. © 2025, Rasayan Journal of Chemistry, c/o Dr. Pratima Sharma. All rights reserved.
