Coffee Bean Dryer's Water Content and Temperature Control System Based on Fuzzy Logic

Abstract

The process of drying coffee beans is a crucial step in coffee production which has an impact on the quality and taste of the final product. The purpose of this study was to evaluate and analyze the performance of controlling temperature and moisture content using fuzzy logic control on a coffee bean dryer through simulation using MATLAB 2017a. The fuzzy logic control method is used to optimize the temperature and moisture content in the coffee bean drying process, with the input variables being ambient temperature and moisture content, and the output variables being presents of valve. The simulation is carried out by implementing the fuzzy logic control model in MATLAB 2017a software and using variable environmental data to observe the response of the coffee bean dryer. The simulation results show that the fuzzy logic control can produce temperature and moisture content settings according to the set targets. This method has been analyzed to produce a control system that can meet the standardization of coffee beans with a moisture content of 12% and maintain the maximum drying temperature at 55°C to 60°C. This can be seen from the resulting temperature chart when the temperature has reached 60°C to 70°C, the valve opening is kept constant so that the temperature does not increase further. Through this simulation, it can be concluded that setting the temperature and moisture content in the coffee bean dryer using fuzzy logic control can provide adequate results. © 2023 IEEE.
