Abstract

Active position solar panel which performs sun tracking is one way to maximize the power output of a PV. By aligning the PV direction perpendicular to the sun position, the achieved output can be maximized. Previous research on sun tracking were done by using a photo sensor (LDR) to track the sun. However, this method demonstrated less accurate in cloudy conditions. To overcome this issue, this research proposed to develop an active tracking based on time scheduling. While active tracking based on scheduling has also been investigated widely, the mechanical designs were mostly based on polar / spin coordinate system. This research implemented and investigated different approach of mechanical design, which is using 2 axis cartesian model. The results of this study demonstrated that the proposed method produced higher total energy compared to static PV systems. Higher total energy is achieved especially due to the ability to track the sun in both sunny and cloudy conditions. © 2023 IEEE.
