Remaining Life Prediction of Transformers at Medium Voltage Distribution Substations Based on Load Curve

Abstract

Power transformers are electrical devices used in power distribution systems to increase (step-up) or decrease (step-down) the electrical voltage to suit the needs of electricity users. Transformers are very important in supporting human electricity needs. The increasing demand for electricity makes the continuity of electricity supply a top priority. Electricity supply is important to meet the increasing load demand. Meeting the increasing load demand requires a transformer with a long remaining life of 20.55 years according to the IEC 60076-7, 2005 standard. This study in determining the remaining life of the transformer uses a basis load curve. The remaining life of the transformer using the basis load curve has a remaining life of the transformer in 2023 24.48 years, 2024 23.51 years, and 2025 22.53 years. The remaining life requires a mitigation and maintenance process for the transformer in order to extend the remaining life of the transformer. A long remaining life can avoid excessive loading or oil contamination by outside air. Therefore, to avoid this, routine mitigation and maintenance are carried out to prevent damage or failure before more serious damage occurs. © 2024 IEEE.
