Abstract

Transformers play a crucial role in power systems, requiring extra attention to maintain reliability. As they age, the integrity of insulation paper may decrease, increasing the risk of failure when external short circuit or through fault current (TFC) occurs. By combining TFC quantification with insulation paper condition, transformer risk levels can be determined using a risk matrix method. This study explores different methods to assess transformer insulation paper conditions in TFC risk analysis, including the assessment index method, CO & C02 analysis, and furan analysis. The risk matrix helps understand and mitigate potential risks. Implementation results show an 83.8% similarity in paper condition assessment, indicating fairly consistent risk assessment results. This study contributes significantly to integrating paper insulation condition assessment and TFC risk to improve transformer operational reliability. © 2024 IEEE.
