The limitation of fossil fuels for electricity generation is a very important problem faced today, so that the use of renewable energy is increasing. The photovoltaic system is an electrical energy generator that converts solar energy into electrical energy. The use of PV is increasing because it is pollution-free, free, and low maintenance. However, PV has low conversion efficiency and an increase in PV efficiency can be achieved if it works at the maximum power point (MPP). So it's needed a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) controller. In this article, a modified PO (MPO) MPPT controller is designed for a standalone PV system using a boost converter. MPO finds the MPP by adjusting the duty cycle of the boost converter based on current and voltage measurements. Based on the simulation results, the MPO MPPT algorithm has a better performance than PO. MPO can follow changes in irradiance and produce greater maximum power and faster tracking time than the PO algorithm. For some irradiance conditions, MPO can achieve an average efficiency of 92.65% while PO is 83.45%. © 2021 IEEE.
