Assessing Transformer Insulation Aging through Oil Treatment Index: A Comparative and Correlation Study of 150 kV Power Transformers

Abstract

Power transformers are important electrical equipment with a high investment value in the electrical system. Manufacturers design transformers to operate for many years, but the aging factors of the transformer can trigger operational failures. Such failures result in significant losses and disrupt the distribution of electrical energy to consumers. To prevent this, it is necessary to assess the aging of the transformer through its insulation material, namely oil. Three factors - chemical, electrical, and physical - affect the condition of transformer oil insulation. The frequently tested oil insulation parameters were observed, such as interfacial tension (IFT), color, breakdown voltage (BDV), acidity, and moisture content. The scoring matrix method in CIGRE TB 761 was implemented to obtain power transformer oil treatment index (OTI) from those five oil tests. This study then analyzes the correlation between OTI (Oil Treatment Index) as well as each oil parameter to the transformer operating age. This study also compares and evaluates three sets of previously proposed weighting factors. The implementation and analysis is done to 55 data points of 150 kV power transformers. © 2023 IEEE.
