Abstract

Recently, English becomes the primary language of instruction in many universities and educational institutions around the world. Proficiency in English enables access to a wide range of educational resources, research materials, and study programs in various academic disciplines. In English study, grammar can be complex, with various tenses, verb forms, sentence structures, and rules, where students may find it challenging to grasp and apply the rules correctly, leading to errors in speaking and writing. To improve English learning effectiveness, the self-study model becomes necessary, and adaptive learning is a leading model for native students. This paper presents the implementation of English grammar self-study in Adaptive English Personalized Learning System (ADELS). By adopting domain specific graph, it is used to support self-studying English grammar by providing 10 learning topics. The assessment and evaluation are conducted through its application to ten university students. ADELS can identify areas of strength and areas that require further improvement. The prominent role of assessment in English grammar learning is taken care of by ADELS with the provision of assessment at each level and suggestions to further continue to higher level or lower level. © 2023 IEEE.
